Description

Service Plate, Lenox Incorporated 1931-1953 10.5 Inches NHHC 1985-87-A Naval History and Heritage Command: Headquarter Artifact Collection

This bold plate was produced between 1931 and 1953 by Lenox, the acclaimed American porcelain manufacturer. Each plate in this service features a different clipper ship, hand-painted by New Jersey native Graham Holmes. This, and a number of additional plates from the service, was donated to the Naval History and Heritage Command to be displayed in Tingey House. Located on the Washington Navy Yard, the historic house became the residence of the Chief of Naval Operations in 1977. Exhibiting expert American craftsmanship and depicting the United States’ long legacy of naval aptitude, the plates are often selected for display at Tingey House by its residents.
