Summary
editDescriptionClubhouse Buffalo - fmr University Church of Christ - Buffalo, New York - 20200725.jpg |
English: Clubhouse Buffalo, 62 Englewood Avenue at Cornell Street, Buffalo, New York, July 2020. A Late Gothic Revival church of fairly typical design for the era, the building sports a T-shaped floor plan, large Gothic-arched stained glass windows looking out onto both Englewood Avenue and Cornell Street, and a Gothic-arched main entrance topped with a prominent gable in seeming reflection of the window and roofline above. The shingle siding on the upper portions of the lateral elevations make for an interesting contrast with what's otherwise a brick façade. Designed by architect Frank Spangenberg, the erstwhile University Church of Christ was built in 1921 to replace the former building on the site, designed by architect John Hopper Coxhead and destroyed by fire the previous year while it was still under construction. Founded in 1911 as a mission operated by the Central Church of Christ to serve the residents of the newly urbanizing University Heights neighborhood, the congregation endured until 1996 whereupon the building was sold to its current owners, Restoration Society, Inc. is a faith-based, peer-operated agency offering recovery services to homeless, substance-abusing, and other at-risk individuals within the local community. Here they operate Clubhouse Buffalo, an activity center for adolescents and young adults recovering from substance abuse. |
