This Coast Guard Lifeboat Station, which entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, sits high up on Port Orford Head. The lifeboats themselves were launched from this rocky shore at the base of the cliff. During the Station's decades of operation in the mid-20th century, Coast Guard members would descend the long staircase at all hours to rescue ships caught in stormy waters. On a rare calm day, the ocean hides its destructive might in the hidden bay below the old Coast Guard Lifeboat Station in Port Orford.
