Version used since 1466 with an open royal crown used until 1700. Argent quarter changed Or in the 19th Century.

Versión usada desde 1466 con corona real abierta usada hasta 1700. Cuartel de plata (blanco) sustituido por oro (amarillo) en el siglo XIX.

La primitiva concesión de este escudo se remonta a la conquista de Jaén en 1246 por Fernando III, [...] el primitivo blasón se tuvo que componer necesariamente cuartelando de gules y plata. Con el tiempo, estas armas se vieron posiblemente acrecentadas por Enrique II con una bordura de catorce piezas, compuesta por castillos de oro sobre gules y leones rampantes de gules sobre plata, que simbolizan, respectivamente, la armería completa de los reinos de Castilla y León [...]. Posteriormente, Enrique IV por Privilegio dado en Segovia el 9 de junio de 1466, aparte de confirmar las concesiones hechas por sus antecesores, confirió por timbre del escudo la corona real.
