English: Illustration of autocomplex of CoCl2 in DMSO. The other 4 tubes are for comparison. From left to right: CoCl2 in H2O, CoCl2 in HCl (containing [CoCl4]2-), CoCl2 in DMSO, Co(ClO4)2 in DMSO (containing [Co(DMSO)6]2+) and Co(ClO4)2 in H2O. All cobalt salts are 0.5 mol/L and hexahydrated. CoCl2 reacts with DMSO to form an autocomplex: 2 CoCl2 + 6 DMSO ⇌ [Co(DMSO)6]2+ + [CoCl4]2-. The color of this solution is the mix color of [CoCl4]2- and [Co(DMSO)6]2+.
