Summary edit

Description
English: Postcard of the Coeur d'Alene Bank & Trust Company's building, located at the Northwest corner of Sherman Avenue and N 2nd Street on the West end of downtown. One of several Inland Empire banks owned by a brother of prominent Spokane banker J.J. Browne, he commissioned architect Willis A. Ritchie, best known for designing the Spokane and Jefferson County courthouses (among others) in Washington, to design this imposing structure in 1905. Ritchie would recycle the design the following year for another Browne family bank in Wenatchee that no longer stands as well as a miniature version for a Browne-owned bank in Cashmere, WA that still stands. It has been known as the Johnston Building since 1947, when it was purchased by brothers Bob & Don Johnston. The building later served as offices for the Interstate Telephone Company and has undergone severe alteration over the years that has destroyed most of the stonework on the ground floor and covered the upper floors and cornice in marblecrete and a metal slipcover façade.
