Title
Columbus Urban Homestead Lottery
Description
A view of two unidentified men recreating the Urban Homestead Lottery. Behind them is a board showing the names of the winners and the addresses of the property that were awarded on July 22, 1980. The lottery program was begun in 1975 by the Department of Development for a way to rehabilitate inner city neighborhoods. Lottery winners were sold a house for $1. In return, they agreed to rehabilitate the homes and live in them for at least four years before gaining a clear property title. The houses were purchased by the city from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. See also: "Dream of 'Homesteaders' Blooms In House Lottery," in the Columbus Dispatch, July 23, 1980, page B-1.
