English: Commemoration of the founding of West India Dock This stone tablet, in Hertsmere Road on the dock wall which is the side wall of Lloyds No. 1 Bar and Ledger Building, marked the laying of the first stone on July 12th 1800, with the concurrence of Lord Loughborough the Lord High Chancellor, William Pitt (the younger), Prime Minister, George Hibbert and Robert Milligan, chairman and deputy chairman of the West India Dock Company. The purpose of this first secure dock was to ensure that the valuable cargoes from the West Indies would no longer be prey to pilfering. |
