JAMES WARD (deceased) was one of the mostinfluential and best known citizens of Connecticut,of which State he was a loyal son during his longand useful life of eighty-seven years. Mr. Ward was born in Guilford, New HavenCo., Conn., Feb. 2, 1767, a son of Bilrous Ward,and a grandson of Andrew Ward. He was intense-ly public-spirited, always ready to bear more thanhis share of public burdens, and was actively identi-fied with many important enterprises for the goodof the community at large, and the relief of suffer-ing humanity. At one time he was chief engineerof the Hartford Fire Department, was a leadingand valued member of the Connecticut HistoricalSociety, one of the principal officers (trustee) ofthe Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, and a zealousworker in the establishment of the Retreat for theInsane, being a director of same, toward the successof which enterprise he was a liberal contributor.He was a member and past grand master of the
