Summary
editDescriptionCompartment Boat Hoist No.5 - geograph.org.uk - 456250.jpg |
English: Compartment Boat Hoist No.5, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The last of Goole's five compartment boat hoists on South Dock, now looked after by a charity called The South Dock Compartment Boat Co. Ltd. Container (or compartment) boats called Tom Puddings were linked together in trains to transport coal down the Aire & Calder Navigation from the Yorkshire coalfields to Goole, where each boat would be lifted out of the water by hydraulic hoists such as this one and its cargo emptied into the hold of a waiting coaster. At the industry's peak in 1913 over 1000 Tom Puddings carried one and a half million tons of coal down the canals to Goole in a single year. The system had become uneconomic by the 1980s and the hoists fell into disrepair. Hoist No.5 was rescued and restored in 1996-97. |
