Description
English: The office building of Concordia Cemetery, 438 Walden Avenue, Buffalo, New York, as seen in April 2021. The cemetery was founded in 1859 by a consortium of three East Side German Protestant churches, but the office building seen here, along with a former barn now used as a maintenance shed, predate it and thus figure among the oldest extant structures in this section of Buffalo. A wood-framed cottage in a vernacular Gothic Revival style whose most interesting feature is the transom and sidelights surrounding the front entrance, the house is supposed to have been built around 1845 on a then-rural tract of land owned by John Stellwagen (1826-1876), though this appears not to have been his primary residence. Born in Germany, as a young man Stellwagen quickly carved a place for himself among the commercial and political elite of the local German-American community: he worked as a dry goods merchant, an agent for the Howard Life Insurance Company of New York, and real estate agent responsible for extensive land holdings on the East Side; dabbled in politics (a Democrat, he served terms as Erie County Commissioner of Deeds and as 4th Ward vice-president), and later in life entered the financial industry.
