Summary edit

Description
English: Concrete shelter at Hampton, Herne Bay. Until at least the 1960s it was open underneath and sheltered a set of benches. At the sides between the steps and the shelter were public lavatories, and the roof was used for deckchairs in summer. The shelter was painted in pastel colours in the 1950s and 60s: pink then blue. This site features in Will Scott's 1955 children's book Half-Term Trail. Since that time the lavatories at the sides have been closed, and rebuilt inside the building where the seating used to be; so it is now a public lavatory and no longer a shelter.
