Description
English: I am building an optical communications system based on new types of optical fibres that are hollow rather than solid. In this picture I am connecting a roll of optical fibre to the testbed. In an optical communications system, digital information is translated into pulses of light using a laser. This information is sent down an optical fibre at the speed of light but is slightly impeded because it travels through glass. The theoretical advantage of using hollow core fibres (over fibres of solid glass) is that we should be able to send even more information, faster than ever before! The signal is analyzed at the receiver & the number of errors transmitted is calculated. Our aim is to minimise these errors & to make the transmission more efficient.
