English: Console 9. Nereid on a hippocamp.
It is the ninth console counting counter-clockwise from the east portal. Christine Smith. The Pisa Baptistery (Garland Press, 1978), p. 164, fig. 161: Console 9 has a classical subject - a nereid galloping on a hippocamp. It should be noted that the subject requires the representation of a female nude, a rare motif. The carving of 9, like that of 7, seems a little dry and lifeless with the same bare areas of block. As with the siren and the centaur, the bodies are sculpted exactly one-half in the round, and the parts of the body are smooth and rounded. |
