Description
English: The convent on the campus of Our Lady of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church in Cheektowaga, New York, as seen in March 2023. Completed in 1953, this building, along with the rectory facing Willowlawn Parkway, represents the second phase of construction on the present-day church complex: Buffalo architect Joseph Fronczak, who in 1928 designed the combination sanctuary and school that served as the parish's first home, returned nearly a quarter-century later with a plan for three more structures that would be arranged around a central courtyard and would reflect the same Italian Renaissance Revival architecture as the original building. Built at a cost of $175,000 between them, the rectory and convent each share the same simple, functional approach to the style: note especially the entrance, doubly recessed between projecting lateral wings as well as deep within a round-arched portal; a blueprint not dissimilar to the Felician convent that he designed for the identically-named church in North Tonawanda. The building included accommodation for twelve Sisters of Charity as well as a library and a small chapel.. The third building, a new and larger sanctuary, appears in the renderings released by Fronczak ahead of the October 1952 groundbreaking, but was left unrealized; it wasn't until 1973 that the present-day worship hall was built in a Modernist style strikingly dissimilar to the rest of the complex. The 1928 building remained in use as a school until 2000.
