Summary edit

Description Introduced, warm-season, annual, pale-grey herb to 1 m tall; forms a rosette when young and is covered with dense spreading hairs. Upper leaves are linear with entire margins; lower leaves are linear to narrow-lanceolate and coarsely toothed. Flowerheads are panicles of many small creamy heads 5-6 mm long; each surrounded by densely hairy bracts. Flowering is throughout year. A native of South America, it is a common weed of disturbed pastures, roadsides, cultivation and wasteland. Generally the only Conyza species found in cropping paddocks, it is widely spread by its prolific windblown seed that readily invades bare or degraded areas. Rarely a serious problem in pastures, except at establishment or if the pasture is severely degraded. Eaten by sheep and horses, but not by cattle. Pasture competition and groundcover are important for control. Correcting soil acidity and nutrient deficiencies and using good grazing management can help to improve pasture competitiveness. Very difficult to control with herbicides, especially once it has run up to seed.
