Description
English: IMAGE INFO
  • The viewpoint for this historic and rare image is looking southwards from where the future Arden Street climbs the hill northwards from Bream Street.
  • The image is dated circa mid 1889, since the Coogee Palace & Aquarium have been built (first opened 23 December 1887) and the Palace's "Toboggan Rink" slide ride is visible (it opened Saturday 27 October 1888, closed 12 months later in October 1889 and was demolished by November that year!).
  • There are NO swimmers or bathers in the water since public swimming or bathing during daylight hours was banned at the time (not repealed at Coogee Beach until October 1902).
  • General lack of sight-seers and picnickers suggests it is not a weekend photo either!

SOURCE INFO

  • Photographer is Henry King.
  • The original silver gelatin dry plate glass negative (full plate) was digitized by the Museum of Applied Arts & Science and is available from the M.A.A.S. online Tyrrell Collection here: https://ma.as/31516

CREDITS

  • Henry King (photographer)
  • Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences (aka Powerhouse Museum) New South Wales for their valuable work in digitizing, archiving and making available online this rare historical content.

COPYRIGHT STATUS

  • The original image is no longer restricted by commercial Copyright, per advice -

"Out of Copyright – Reason for copyright status: Created/Published Date is Before 1955 – Material type: Photograph – Government copyright ownership: No Government Copyright Ownership"

  • As for my own work in creating this unique restored duo-toned version of the original, the only Copyright form I have applied is "Attribution-Share Alike".

PROCESS INFO

  • I downloaded a copy of the digitized original (large file size and very faded with a lot of bad emulsion damage).
  • Using Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 8.0 I cropped the worst damage out, enlarged the resulting image, then repaired remaining less damaged sections, removing unwanted artifacts, restoring contrast, sharpness and applying adjusted duo-tone curves for better tonal range.
