Description

The Cook County Criminal Court Building in Chicago (1893). It replaced the North Market Hall, which burned down in the Great Chicago Fire. It hosted many famous trials during its 35 years of usage as a court. In 1886, the Haymarket trials were conducted here, which found eight anarchists guilty of murder, four of which were hanged. In 1920, a trial began for the Chicago Black Sox scandal, although critical evidence was taken from the court building before the trial could begin, including the signed confessions of two players (they later recanted their confessions). "Terrible Tommy" O'Conner was sentenced to death in 1921 for killing a police officer, but escaped from the building four days before his execution. In 1924, Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold, Jr. were found guilty of the murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks and sentenced to life imprisonment. The trial was considered to be one of the biggest victories for advocates against capital punishment.
