Summary
editDescriptionCoon-Rand House, Buffalo, New York - 20220711.jpg |
English: The Coon-Rand House, 72 Middlesex Road, Buffalo, New York, July 2022. Built in 1925 to a design by the firm of North & Shelgren, here we have a relatively unusual example of Tudor Revival architecture in which the façade is nearly symmetrical and many usual stylistic hallmarks (bluntly pointed arches, half-timbering, wide vergeboards, dark earth-tone colors) are scarce or wholly absent, while others (small windows, an understated main entrance, multiple prominent chimneys; exterior walls of varied composition in which brick, stucco, and clapboard all serve as siding in one section or another) are very much in evidence. 72 Middlesex's original owner was William M. Coon (1880-1943), a longtime auto dealer (his eponymous William M. Coon Inc. sold Stearns-Knight and Nash vehicles from a showroom at the corner of Main and Summer Streets) turned reluctant political appointee (serving on the board of the City Sewer Authority) who resided there until very shortly before his death. However, in the public mind of today the house is much more closely identified with subsequent owner George F. Rand III (1923-1991), a scion of a prominent family in Buffalo's financial sphere who made his name as founding chairman of Rand Capital, the city's only publicly-owned venture capital firm, and held executive positions with a long list of civic and philanthropic groups. Rand purchased the house in 1954 and continued living there until his retirement in 1988. |
