Description
English: Coppicing, Freeholders Wood Freeholders Wood is an example of ancient woodland, records of its existence going back at least 400 years. Since the early 1980's it has been owned by the Yorkshire Dales National Park, who have reintroduced a programme of coppicing. This wood has been coppiced for centuries to provide the people of Carperby with wood for hurdles, fencing, tools, building etc. Now it is coppiced to maintain the rich diversity of plant and animal life. The small area shown in the photo was coppiced in early 2007. The mesh guards are to protect the new tree shoots from roe deer and rabbits.
