Description

Corallorrhiza mertensiana Bong. Pacific coralroot, western coralroot Orchidaceae

These are mycotrophic plants that obtain their organic carbon from a host green plant by tapping into an intermediary mycorrhizal fungus attached to the roots of the host plant.

Myco-heterotrophy is a symbiotic relationship between certain kinds of plants and fungi, in which the plant gets all or part of its food from parasitism upon fungi rather than from photosynthesis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myco-heterotrophy accessed 26 April 2010

The white flowers are Cornus unalaschkensis Bunchberry in the Cornaceae family Blanca Lake Trail 1052 , Snohomish County, Washington, USA 15 Jul 2006
