Nederlands: gravure van een dubbelportret in medallion van Cornelis en Johan de Wit. Cornelis de Witt was de twee jaar oudere broer van Johan de Witt. Hij was lid van de vroedschap, regent in Dordrecht, ruwaard van de heerlijkheid Putten en baljuw van de Beijerlanden 1623-1672 Johan de Witt (Dordrecht, 24 september 1625[noot 1] – Den Haag, 20 augustus 1672), heer van Zuid- en Noord-Linschoten, Snelrewaard, Hekendorp en IJsselvere,[noot 2] was in de Gouden Eeuw tijdens het Eerste Stadhouderloze Tijdperk negentien jaar lang raadpensionaris van het gewest Holland en daarmee de belangrijkste politicus van de Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden. Hij was tevens een begenadigd wiskundige, die beschouwd wordt als een van de grondleggers van de verzekeringswiskunde. Hoewel hedendaags Nederland hem kent als Johan met zijn voornaam, noemden zijn vrouw en veel tijdgenoten hem Jan.
Johan werd met zijn broer Cornelis door orangisten vermoord en op gruwelijke wijze verminkt. De moord behoort tot de meest gedenkwaardige in de Nederlandse geschiedenis |
