Description
English: These pieces of late 19th-century English glassware all draw their inspiration from the Portland Vase, a very famous work of Roman cameo glass from the early 1st century A.D. that has mystified archaeologists and art historians since its rediscovery c. 1600. An early example of blown glass, the Portland vase was crafted using the dip-overlay method, whereby an elongated bubble of glass was partially dipped into a crucible of white glass before the two were blown together. After cooling, the outer layer was chiseled away by a skilled gem-cutter to form the design: a collection of human figures in various poses as well as a large snake, whose meaning is unclear and the subject of intense debate. In 1873, artists Philip Pargeter and John Northwood of the Red House Glass Works of Wordsley, England finally succeeded in creating a replica of the Portland Vase using what are thought to be the original manufacturing techniques; this is seen in the bottom row at center. Northwood alone also produced an 1880 copy of the vase in stoneware, this is seen at bottom left. The manufacture of these replicas kicked off a trend of glassware depicting the same manner of Classically-inspired iconography, examples of which are seen elsewhere in the display. As seen in the "35 Centuries of Glass" gallery during a March 2022 visit to the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York.
