| Description |
English: On display in the "35 Centuries of Glass" gallery at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York is this wooden étagère, a c. 1895 work of French cabinetmaker Gabriel Viardot. As is typical of his work, the aesthetic appends prominent Japanese and other Far Eastern influences onto basic forms that retained appeal for Western tastes. Especially exemplary of the former are the dragons and other mythical monsters portrayed in the bronze mounts, as well as the engraved and enameled animal imagery in the glass inlays, based on the work of renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. The shelves are stacked with elegant vases and other glassware in the Art Nouveau style that was popular around the same time. As seen during an April 2022 visit to the museum. |
