Description
English: Corundum amphibolite from the Ordovician of North Carolina, USA. (~12.5 centimeters across at its widest)

Amphibolite is a dark-colored metamorphic rock dominated by amphibole. It is usually weakly foliated but can be crystalline-textured. Amphibolites are principally composed of hornblende amphibole and plagioclase feldspar. Many amphibolites form by metamorphism of basalt or gabbro (= mafic igneous rocks).

The rock seen here has purplish-red corundum in it (click on the photo once or twice to zoom in) - those are rubies. The black and green component is amphibole. This material is metamorphosed Proterozoic oceanic crust. Regional metamorphism occurred in the Ordovician, during the Taconic Orogeny, at about 458 million years ago.

Geologic unit: metagabbro from the Chunky Gal Complex (Chunky Gal Mountain Mafic-Ultramafic Complex), ~458 Ma metamorphic age

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site on Chunky Gal Mountain, southeastern Clay County, Blue Ridge, far-western North Carolina, USA
