Description

Cosmetics jar, created in Egypt about 1479 to 1425 BC. Found in Thebes.

This is the earliest known glass object covered in enamel. It was probably part of the Tomb of Tuthmosis III, and held oils used in the ceremony of the "Opening of the Mouth". During this ceremony, which occurred as the mummy was being buried in the tomb, the priest would magically and ritualistically open the mouth of the mummy -- so that the pharaoh could eat, drink, and breathe in the afterlife.
