Description

This male osprey was captured delivering the fatal bite to this fish on Tigertail Beach, Marco Island, Florida on 13 March 2012.

Ospreys always begin eating fish at the head, simply because it is easier to get the beak into the gills, mouth or eyes. It is a well-repeated myth that the male removes the head before taking a fish to the nest for the safety of the chicks. The pictures in this photostream (and others) show whole fish being delivered. Sometimes the male eats some of the fish before delivering the remainder to the nest. In those cases the head is missing.

The osprey opens its wings to keep balance as it takes the first large bite. It took me by surprise so I didn't have the right dof and ISO but I think the special moment has to be shared.
