Cpl. David D. Cole (CP 1300), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Corporal David D. Cole, Company A, 2nd New York Cavalry, who had his knee joint disarticulated due to a wound sustained at the battle of Amelia Courthouse, Virginia on April 3rd, 1865. The knee was disarticulated on August 1st, 1865 following infection of the wound with gangrene. Treated by Dr. George M. McGill at the Hicks U.S. General Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. Here, he sits with his prosthetic leg. Caption reads: "Disarticulation of the knee joint, with artificial leg, Hudson's adaptation. Corp'l David D. Cole, Co. A, 2d N.Y.C."
