Description
English: Crailing Old Parish Churchyard This old churchyard is about 100m to the south of Crailing House and has been fenced off, thus preserving an impressive collection of symbolic stones. Little remains of the original chapel building granted to Jedburgh Abbey in the early 12th century. The two headstones in the foreground are displaying the crown and hammer symbols of the Hammerman's Guild, and its membership embraced all crafts which used a hammer on metal. These stones have sunk into the ground and only show the top of an anvil below the hammer. The memorials are likely to be to blacksmiths because of the pincers shown either side of the hammer.
