DescriptionCrane and Former Goods Shed at Clare (geograph 3591314).jpg |
English: Crane and Former Goods Shed at Clare. Clare, like most rural stations, had a small goods yard; the railway was the only practical way of transporting goods en masse around the country in the nineteenth century. Clare goods shed, now the park visitor centre, handled perishable items and small crates which could be loaded by hand. The crane was used to lift heavier crates and other items. It was manually operated using a winding handle to control the steel rope and lifting hook, while a metal bar was used to rotate the crane to a different position.
When Clare goods yard closed in 1966 (and the station in the following year) much of the railway material was deemed as surplus to requirements and either scrapped or recycled by British Railways. The track and signal pylons were removed and Clare's crane was scrapped. The crane at nearby Glemsford was saved from destruction by a farmer who used it on his farm until, in 2004, it was donated for display at Clare Castle Country Park, where it now stands on the site of the original crane. |
