| Description |
On the evening of 18 March 1843, the RNZAF Supermarine Walrus NZ153 crashed nose-first into the water at Hobsonville, shortly after taking off for a night time training flight. Two of the men on board escaped from the water, but 23-year old Pilot Officer Morris McIntyre (Mack) Bee – who was in the co-pilot seat at the time – was not so lucky. This summary of the accident comes from the Air Department Accident Report of the crash. It contains statements by the witnesses, as well as the inquest into the death of Pilot Officer Bee (who appears to have been struck unconscious on impact and drowned).
