The authors, dressed in special jumpsuits to protect them from the harsh climate, are using magnetometers to search for the meteorite pieces. The tall antenna on the white Hummer vehicle is for Global Positioning System tracking — essential in the middle of the desert, where it is easy to get lost in the protean landscape.
