Description
English: Crich Railways information board A large boulder has been used as the stand for this information board about the railways which served the quarries in the Crich area. It stands above the mouth of the tunnel under part of Crich village on George Stephenson's line to Cliff Quarry. This was built as early as 1841 as part of Stephenson's Clay Cross Company venture. This Company was formed when he discovered high quality coking coal when cutting the tunnel on the Midland Railway at Clay Cross. The limestone at Crich was of good quality for converting to lime using the surplus slack coal from the Clay Cross mines. Lime kilns were built at Ambergate on the Midland Railway main line and the railway connected the quarry with these. There was a parallel railway from two other quarries close to Crich village which were developed by the Butterley Company to feed its ironworks at Butterley. This railway fed onto the Cromford Canal at Bull Bridge whence it could be shipped to Butterley.
