editDescriptionCrislip Arcade, 645 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, Florida.jpg |
English: The Crislip Arcade, located at 645 Central Avenue between 6th Street S. and 7th Street S. in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, was built c.1926, one of many open-air shopping arcades in the city. By 2006, only three arcades remained, and the Crislip Arcade was bought up along with other buildings on the block to make way for new mixed-use condominium apartment tower. Tenants were moved out in preparation, but a downturn in the real estate market mitigated against any new construction on the properties. In 2008 the St. Petersburg City Council, acting on a proposal of St. Pete Preservation, passed legislation providing some protection for the Crislip Arcade as an historic building. By 2010, the arcade had revived, and featured artists' studios and galleries, performance spaces, and other arts-related businesses. (Sources: [1], [2]) The building is located within the Downtown St. Petersburg Historic District. |
