La hyene tachetee est reconnaissable a ses oreilles courtes et arrondies et a ses pattes anterieures relativement longues. Son pelage de couleur sable avec des taches noires, la differencie des autres hyenes. Le poids d'une hyene tachetee varie entre 40 et 86 kg et sa longueur peut atteindre les 1,60 metres. Chez cette hyene, les organes genitaux femelles sont tres developpes, au point de les faire parfois ressembler a ceux des males. Cette disproportion est due a un taux de testosterone bien plus eleve chez les femelles que chez les males, les femelles sont plus grandes et plus lourdes que les males. Elles sont aussi plus agressives. La femelle domine le groupe, qui varie de 5 adultes, ou moins, avec les petits, dans les regions desertiques, a 50, ou plus, dans les savanes riches en proies. La femelle a en moyenne deux petits qui naissent au bout de cent jours de gestation. Elle les eleve sans l'aide du pere. Quand ils sont ages de quelques mois, les petits rejoignent un terrier commun, ou ils restent jusqu'au sevrage, a l'age de 15 mois. La societe est matriarcale. Les femelles sont les individus dominants, et le rang hierarchique se transmet de mere en fille. La hyene tachetee emet une grande variete de cris et de grognements pour rallier le groupe ou localiser les petits. Lorsqu'elle est tres excitee, la hyene tachetee emet un cri qui ressemble a un "ricanement". |
