English: Cross Harbour Ferry moored at SS Great Britain, BRISTOL This passenger ferry came into service in recent years with the development of residential property on the northern bank of Bristol's "Floating Harbour", at Capricorn Quay, to provide quicker and easier access across the harbour (River Avon) saving residents and visitors the extra 20/30 minutes walk otherwise needed to reach the opposite bank. Several precursors to this existed in earlier times such as the Mardyke Ferry, operated by rowing boat, from the former timber and ship yards of Baltic Wharf (now a housing development) to the area of the Gas Works and Sand Tips on the northern side.
Recently, this ferry has extended its scope to include a stop at newly-built floating moorings and a marina, adjacent to the extensive residential and commercial property being erected east of Capricorn Quay. Currently, the single fare is 60 pence and the crossing takes about 3 minutes. |
