| Description |
Crossing a border on foot is one of travels great pleasures. The border between Georgia and the Republic of Abkhazia. This region is one of the frozen conflict zones that are scattered around the margins of the Soviet Union. Abkhazia along with Nagorno Karabakh, Ossetia, and Transnistria are all former parts of the Soviet Union that because of ethnic Russian majorities resisted inclusion in successor states of the USSR like Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Moldova. Fought brief successful wars for independence and have maintained there independence often with direct military assistance from Russia. For the most part none are recognized as independent states. |
