Summary edit

Description
English: Built in 1880, this Second Empire and Italianate-style mill was designed by W.F. Gunn and was home to the Crown Roller Mill. The mill was powered by water flowing through a tailrace beneath the building until 1933, and was the second-largest flour mill on the west bank of the Mississippi River, following the Washburn-Crosby Mill. The mill features a buff brick facade with a rusticated limestone base, pilasters between window bays, arched windows, decorative red brick and brownstone trim accents over the windows, and a mansard roof with a bracketed cornice. The mill saw the addition in 1908 of a buff brick boiler house, which features a stepped parapet, arched windows and steel industrial windows, pilasters, and a 175-foot-tall concrete chimney. The original mansard roof on the mill was removed in 1944 and replaced with a red-brick one-story roof addition, which was destroyed by a fire in 1983, which led to a partial collapse of the building and destruction of the upper floors, with a subsequent restoration of the mill back to its early 20th Century appearance, along with adaptive reuse as an office building, being completed in 1987. In the process of the renovation, one of the waterpower turbines, still in place after decades of disuse, was removed to allow for the management of stormwater on the property, with the other turbine remaining in place. The building is a contributing structure in the Saint Anthony Falls Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
