Lambrecht Hopfer
Title
Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John
Description

Lambrecht Hopfer was the son of Daniel Hopfer (1471-1536), the first artist to etch on iron to make prints. This etching is after Dürer's 16-plate series The Engraved Passion. The original series was engraved, but Hopfer chose his family invention of etching to copy the Crucifixion. Hopfer's etching was initially published without the number '182' in the lower margin. That was added several years later by David Funck (1642-1709), who acquired a couple of hundred plates from the Hopfer family and republished them.

Hopfer made several accurate, but inexpensive, reproductive prints during his life, many of which after Dürer's work. This demonstrates the popularity of Dürer's prints and how Hopfer made them accessible and affordable for everyone by reproducing them.
