Cruciform |

Description |
English: Narrow cruciform brooch made of copper alloy, missing its foot (fresh break). The central panel of the headplate is the same width as the bow; there are traces of perhaps three or four ?double-crescent stamps running down each side. The wings are of thinner metal and have broken away almost completely (very old breaks). The top knob survives, chunky and full-round and cast in one with the headplate. It consists of a circular disc, then a waist and then a hemispherical terminal. On the reverse of the headplate is a pin bar lug with remains of the iron pin bar. The bow is steeply curved and has a flat panel at the top, which has a U-shaped notch on either side above a pair of transverse grooves. Below this, the bow is roughly D-shaped in section with a flat reverse, flat centre and facetted sides. The reverse is in good condition but the upper face has lost nearly all of its surface. Surviving length 40 mm, surviving width of headplate12.5 mm, width of bow at break 8.5 mm. |
