Description

Panel 7 - Top Row

Window 39: Psyche uses her other wheat cake and Obol to cross safely back out of Hades. After departing from hell, however, Psyche succumbs to curiosity, just as she did when she used the lantern to see Eros. She opens the vial, but instead of perfume it contains the scent of death (eternal sleep) and Psyche falls to the ground. Eros finds her, however, and with a tiny prick from one of her arrows brings her back to life.

Window 40: Psyche and Eros are reunited. Eros puts the scent of death back in the vial and gives it to Psyche so that she can complete her last labor for Aphrodite.

Window 41: Eros goes to his grandfather, Zeus, the king of the gods, and explains to him all that has happened. Eros pleads with Zeus to allow Psyche to join him. Zeus agrees and sends Hermes off to call all the gods to a gathering.

Panel 7 - Bottom Row

Window 42: Psyche appears three times in this complex scene. On the right, below the cloud, Hermes is seen bringing Psyche to the gathering of the gods. In the main scene in the center, Psyche is presented to Zeus and all the gods. (This window was damaged and “rewritten” by a 18th century restorer who did not understand the story of Eros and Psyche. It originally depicted Zeus seated on his throne in the center with his symbols, an eagle at his feet. The restorer turned Zeus into a bare-breasted woman.) In the top left, Zeus has agreed to admit Psyche so Hermes is taking her to the home of the gods.

Window 43: In the big climatic scene of the story, Psyche is seated next to Zeus as she drinks the ambrosia that will make her immortal. Off to the right, Eros and Aphrodite are reconciled.

Window 44: Shows Eros and Psyche as a couple in bed. They now live forever among the gods.
