Description
English: Metalled Circle at Warham Salt Marshes. At this point along the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path there is an intriguing overgrown circle, perhaps about 100m diameter, of worn concrete/tarmac of post-wartime vintage. The circle, a segment of which is shown above, is sufficiently large enough to be well-marked on the OS 1:25,000 scale map. In the middle of the circle amongst the gorse bushes is a curious metal post, about 3m tall, with rotating arm and the remnants of electrical cabling with military style connectors (see the supplementary photos). Known locally as "The Whirlygig", this was a rotary launcher for radio-controlled aerial targets used to train USAAF B-29 gunners at the nearby WW2 Stiffkey artillery and anti-aircraft training camp prior to its closure in 1955.
