Description
Deutsch: Nike des Paionios von Mende (Pausanias V. 26, 1) gefunden am 21.December 1875 an der auf dem Situationsplane mit a. bezeichneten Stelle, vor der Südostecke des Tempels und über 3 M. unter dem jetzigen Boden; der obere Theil im Sande liegend, der untere als Bestandtheil einer Mauer, zu welcher auch der Inschriftblock des Paionios (s. Taf. VII) gehörte. Höhe von der Fußspitze bis zum Hälfe 1,74 M. Aus dem Felsen auf den sie herabschwebt, fliegt ein Vogel (Adler? Möve?) heraus. Von den acht dreieckigen Blöcken, welche die Haus bildeten und zusammen eine Höhe von 4,60 M. haben, tragen zwei eine umfangreiche Inschrift aus dem zweiten vorchristlichen Jahrhundert, eine Entscheidung über einen zwischen Messeniern und Lakedaimoniern streitigen Landstrich.
