Summary
editDescriptionCyclops from Ubano Monti World Map.png |
English: A cyclops as depicted by Urbano Monti on his 1587 world map. The outer portion of the map depicts land masses south of the equator, some of which do not correspond with any known region of the earth, illustrated with imagined rivers, lakes, forests, mountains, and their inhabitants, including real, fantastic, and mythical creatures.
The cyclops, labeled "ciclops vel monoculus" (cyclops or one-eyed being), is clad in skins and carries a club made from a tree trunk. It appears on a large land mass, the western portion of which is labeled "Terra de Nova Guinea" (Land of New Guinea), with which it roughly corresponds in location. The eastern portion, including the cyclops, is labeled "Brasielia Regno", identifying it as part of the "Kingdom of Brazil", then a colonial possession of Portugal. Image cropped from the full map, part of the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection at Stanford University, assembled and digitized by Brandon Rumsey in 2017. The image is rotated 180° from the source image. |
