NOTE: This image is a focus stacked image of "Cydalima perspectalis chrysalis amidst silk strands of open cocoon - 2020-05-03 focus stack.jpg" consisting of 15 images that were merged using Zerene Stacker Version 1.04 Build T2019-10-07-1410 (licensed). As a result, this image underwent digital manipulation which may have included blending, blurring, cloning, and colour and perspective adjustments. As a result of these adjustments, the image content may be slightly different than reality at the points where the images were combined. This manipulation is often required due to lens, perspective, and parallax distortions.

  • Still attached to silk strands of the forcibly opened cocoon.
  • The discarded (and empty) larval head at one end of the chrysalis was also contained within its cocoon.
  • The now translucent orange-brown mandibles are visible beneath the (at least) 4 point-like eyes of the caterpillar's black left hemispherical headshell.
  • Collected: on box tree in own garden in Aplerbeck, Dortmund, Germany.
  • Magnification: 1:1.6. Length of chrysalis: 20 mm. Width of discarded head (eye to eye): approx. 4 mm.
  • Taken in May 2020.

  • Noch verbunden mit den Seidenfäden des geöffneten Kokons.
  • An einem Ende liegt der leere abgelegte Larvenkopf, der mit im Kokon lag.
  • Die jetzt durchscheinenden zangenartige Mundwerkzeuge sind unterhalb der mindestens 4 punktförmigen, in den schwarzen Kopf-Halbschalen eingelassenen Augen sichtbar.
  • Fundort: in einer Hülle aus Buchsbaumblättern, eigener Garten in Aplerbeck, Dortmund, Deutschland.
  • Vergrößerung: 1:1,6. Länge der Puppe: 20 mm. Kopfbreite (Auge-Auge): ca. 4 mm.
  • Aufgenommen in Mai 2020.

Technical Details / Making of this Image edit

  • Sony lens FE 90mm F2.8 Macro G OSS, magnification 1:1.6.
  • ISO 160, shutter speed 1/125s, aperture 11, bias(=expos.comp.) 0.0, 16-bit RAW (.ARW), WB (white balance) approx. 5300K.
  • 15 images; rotated focus ring from near to far by 0.5 mm after every exposure (0,5 mm increment experimentally verified as best compromise of image overlap for this lens at aperture=11).
  • FOCUS STACK / Zerene Stacker 1.04: stacked 15 JPG images, (b) exported as TIFF/16bit.
  • Photoshop (a) removed remaining dust and sensor specks (b) ToneCurve165~255 (c) Sharpened 200/0.8/20 (d) Selectively enhanced yellow hues (d) exported as JPG/max. quality file with embedded colour profile.
