Cystiphylloides americanum (Edwards & Haime, 1851) - fossil coral from the Devonian of Ohio, USA. This is a silicified, solitary rugose coral ("horn coral"). Solitary rugose corals have tapering calcitic skeletons. During life, a polyp (sea anemone animal) lived in the cup at the top of the skeleton. This particular coral experienced several growth interruptions during life - probably due to storms on shallow seafloors. These interruptions account for the ragged appearance of the outer skeletal surface. The fossil has been silicified (replaced by quartz/silica - SiO2). Silicified fossils are more resistant to weathering than surrounding host rocks. Upon weathering and erosion, such fossils stand out in relief, or are weathered completely free of matrix, as is this specimen. The yellowish-brownish coloration is from iron oxide staining. Classification: Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Rugosa, Cystiphyllidae Stratigraphy: Columbus Limestone, Middle Devonian Locality: undisclosed site in Delaware County, central Ohio, USA See info. at: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rugosa |
