A dune field formed by strong, seasonal winds covers vast plains in Olympia Planum. The dune sands have their source in a cliff that is sometimes a thousand meters high and consists of interlayered layers of ice, sand and dust.

Deutsch: Ein von starken, jahreszeitlich auffrischenden Winden geformtes Dünenfeld bedeckt weite Ebenen in Olympia Planum. Ihre Quelle haben die Dünensande in einer stellenweise tausend Meter hohen Klippe, die aus wechselgelagerten Eis-, Sand- und Staubsichten besteht. Daher sind oberhalb der Klippe auf der rund 30 Kilometer breiten Terrasse auch keine Dünen zu sehen. Die Geländekante besteht aus dem Eis der permanenten Nordpolkappe, die an den meisten Stellen, genau wie die meisten Dünen, von Staub bedeckt ist, was zu der bräunlichen Einfärbung der Landschaftsformen in dieser Szenerie führt. Weiter im Norden, im Bildhintergrund, ist ein kleineres, von hellem Raureif bedecktes Dünenfeld zu sehen, das seinen Ursprung ebenfalls in der nahegelegenen Geländekante hat.

Therefore, no dunes can be seen above the cliff on the approximately 30 kilometer wide terrace. The edge of the terrain consists of the ice of the permanent North Pole cap, which is covered in dust in most places, as are most of the dunes, resulting in the brownish tint of the landforms in this scene. Further to the north, in the background of the image, you can see a smaller dune field covered in light hoarfrost, which also has its origins in the nearby edge of the terrain.
