Object history |
English: The arms of Herne were first granted on July 30, 1900 and confirmed on November 30, 1937 by Otto Hupp. The oak tree is described as the "tree of Westphalia", the area to which the city belongs. The triple mountain in the base is canting, Herne is supposedly derived from "Hügel" (hill). The escutcheon shows the miner's tools, obvious symbols for mining in the town. The trifoil symbolises the oldest mine, which was named "Shamrock", one of the national symbols of Ireland (trifoil or shamrock in Irish-English). |
