Object history
Deutsch: Das Fürststift Kempten errichtete um 1465 in Thingau ein Dorfgericht und erlangte 1485 die Erhebung des Ortes zum Markt. Wie die anderen stifts-kemptischen Niedergerichte besaß auch Thingau bereits im 16. Jahrhundert ein Siegel mit der Umschrift S. IVDICY IN TINGOW und einem gespaltenem Wappenschild, der vorne die Teilung von Rot und Blau zeigt, hinten auf einem Dreiberg an einem hohen Stängel eine tulpenförmige Blume. Sie wird bisweilen auch als Wiesenenzian gedeutet. Die Farben Rot und Blau stellen die Zugehörigkeit zum Fürststift Kempten dar. Das Kloster war schon seit 943 in Thingau begütert. Die Blume in der hinteren Schildhälfte ist nicht zu erklären. Die Gemeinde erhielt 1813 das Wappen in der heute bekannten Form mit zwei übers Kreuz gelegten Mohnblumen. Ein Gutachten des Reichsheroldenamtes von 1914 legte endgültig fest, dass es sich um Mohnblumen handelt und nicht um Kornblumen, wie die Blumen zwischenzeitlich auch interpretiert wurden. Eine Unterscheidung des Ortsnamen in Ober- und Unterthingau erscheint erstmals 1357.
