Description
English: Kristiansand Cathedral (Norwegian: Kristiansand domkirke) is a cathedral of the Church of Norway located in the central part of the city of Kristiansand.
  • The gray brick church was built between 1882 and 1885 on the site of the previous church, which was destroyed by fire in 1880. It follows a cruciform plan in the Neo-Gothic style, designed by architect Henrik Thrap-Meyer. The church measures 70 meters in length, 39 meters in width, and stands at a height of 70 meters, making it one of Norway's largest cathedrals. It has a seating capacity of approximately 1,000 people, with the altar located in the west.
  • Interior: The wooden sculptures of the four evangelists near the choir door were likely created by Michael Røyel in 1750. The marble baptismal font was a gift from 1871, the altarpiece was painted by Eilif Peterssen in 1886, the stained glass windows were created by Karl Kristiansen from 1932 to 1934, the apostle paintings on the pulpit were executed by Hugo Lous Mohr around 1935, the interior was colored by architect Arnstein Arneberg in 1935, the woodwork (pillars and ceiling) was sandblasted in 1960, the reliefs on the doors between the narthex and the nave were crafted by the woodcarver Olaf Hasaas in 1965, the church received a carillon in 1991, the choir section was renovated in 2010, and a new organ was installed in 2013.
